The interactive video directed by Focus Creeps will be revealed on 1st December
The new album European Soul will be out in spring 2015.
The British quartet Citizens! whose critically acclaimed debut album Here We Are came out in 2012 is back with the new single ‘Lighten Up’ and a video by directors Focus Creeps (who made ‘Are You Mine?’ by the Arctic Monkeys and ‘Easy Easy’ by King Krule). The video was made interactive by Parisian digital agency Ginger.
Citizens! is one of these British bands capable of reinventing indie pop on the dancefloor, and this new single is proof of that. ‘Lighten Up’ combines a European pop format with the texture and emotion of American soul. It was produced by Laurent d’Herbecourt (who collaborated on Phoenix’s last album), a role previously held by Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos.
With this new song, that the band describes as an ode to the present moment, Citizens! are taken on by the expert eye of Focus Creeps. In continuation with their previous videos, the filmmakers cultivate the art of capturing fleeting moments to form a light and melancholy piece. It walks us through all the craziness and boredom of the band’s life on tour; sometimes solitary and terribly mundane, or electric and exhilarating.
This ambivalence is highlighted by an interactive experience where the user takes control of the video. We are invited to tap along to the rhythm of ‘Lighten Up’ on our smartphone or keyboard and chose different interpretations of the track.
The number of beats tapped throughout the song will allow us to unlock exclusive content such as live broadcast, tracklistings, premieres, etc.
The track will be available from 23 November on downloading platforms, as well as the whole ‘Lighten Up’ experience on the band’s official website. The album will follow in spring 2015.
