Johnny Jane
Promoter : Super !
Johnny Jane is one of those musicians who seem capable of exploring all styles. Citing the Strokes as well as Yung Lean, King Krule and Sébastien Tellier, the musician delivers songs that never stop changing. And underneath these changing envelopes, his very particular sensitivity always hits the spot. In particular, thanks to melancholic melodies, hyper obvious, and lyrics that are as raw as they are sincere: “Everything is based on emotions. I couldn’t talk about something I’ve seen, I can only talk about what I feel.
On his latest EP Désordres, with a rockier production than his previous releases, Johnny Jane sings about partying and the consequences of it. Dotted with doubts, vapours and dance steps, the record offers unstoppable hits (Normal, Missiles), an acoustic interlude (Jeune Étoile), then mixes guitars, autotune and troubled sincerity (Dans Mon Corps, which sounds a bit like Julian Casablancas playing with Fontaines DC).
Impossible, too, to miss Superstar. The EP’s finale crystallises the anxiety of a generation lost somewhere between the rhinestones of success and a nihilism surrounded by bad news. It’s an immediate hit, a song that we know will last. It’s a song of doubt as much as it is of self assertion, which perfectly reflects the whole record.
Thoughtful enough to know how to doubt, talented enough to shine, Johnny Jane signs with Désordres the continuation of a quasi-perfect and always moving discography, which is likely to continue to surprise an ever growing audience
